Across Europe, road safety remains a top priority. According to the European Commission, buses are involved in thousands of accidents each year, resulting in hundreds of fatalities — many caused by blind spot collisions with vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. To help prevent these tragedies, Stoneridge developed MirrorEye, a state-of-the-art Camera Monitor System that replaces traditional mirrors with high-resolution cameras and in-cabin displays. MirrorEye provides drivers with a clearer, wider view of their surroundings, significantly reducing blind spots and enhancing overall road safety.

As of July 2024, all vehicle registrations in the European Union must comply with the new EU General Safety Regulation (GSR). This regulation is a cornerstone of the EU’s ‘Vision Zero’ initiative, which aims for zero fatalities on European roads by 2050. Under the GSR2, buses are required to be equipped with advanced safety systems, including the Blind Spot Information System (BSIS), which warns drivers of cyclists and pedestrians alongside the vehicle, and the Moving Off Information System (MOIS), which alerts drivers to vulnerable road users in front of the vehicle when moving off.

BSIS and MOIS alerts directly on the monitors

Stoneridge’s MirrorEye integrates BSIS and MOIS warnings directly into the driver’s in-cabin displays, ensuring that drivers are not only aware of their surroundings visually but also actively alerted to potential hazards. When a dangerous situation arises, drivers receive immediate, intuitive warnings while simultaneously seeing the precise location of the threat on their MirrorEye displays.

This seamless combination of enhanced vision and real-time alerts allows drivers to react instantly, reducing reaction times and significantly improving safety for both passengers and vulnerable road users. In the unlikely event that an accident occurs, the Digital Video Stream Output enables recordings you can use for incident documentation, liability protection, and driver training.

Optimum visibility in all conditions

MirrorEye MP II features a built-in surveillance camera, giving drivers maximum awareness of blind spots alongside the bus. Combined with the system’s exceptional image quality, MirrorEye ensures superior visibility in rain, snow, or low light, thanks to heated camera wings and high-definition displays. Infrared lighting further enhances nighttime safety by delivering clear, full-color infrared vision. High-definition digital cameras provide sharp imaging with a wide field of view, reduced glare, and lower eye strain — all of which help minimize driver fatigue and improve overall safety.
