According to German trade media omnibus.news, which inquired directly with the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 665 new electric buses bearing the Mercedes star were registered in Germany in 2025. All vehicles belong to the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro family, with the eIntouro range expect to be commercialized starting this year following launch and start of order intake in 2025.
According to Transport & Environment data based on ACEA figures, in 2025 zero-emission buses accounted for 50% of new city bus registrations in Germany. What is interesting, Germany accounted for 62% of all fuel cell city buses sold in the European Union in 2025, making it the largest national market for hydrogen city buses in the EU. In terms of total market, last year Germany registered 6,890 new buses and coaches, making it the largest market in the European Union by volume. This represents a 28.0% year-on-year increase compared to 2024.
Daimler and MAN lead German e-bus market in 2025
At European level, electrically-chargeable buses accounted for 23.8% of total EU bus registrations in 2025, while zero-emission vehicles represented 60% of new city bus sales, according to ACEA and Transport & Environment data.
MAN Truck & Bus ranked second with 386 newly registered electric buses over 8 tonnes, as reported again by omnibus.news based on KBA data. The media also highlights that MAN led in 2023 with 246 registrations, compared to 231 for Mercedes-Benz. In 2024, Daimler Buses increased its registrations to 379 units, a rise of approximately 64% year-on-year, while MAN’s volumes fell to 94 units, a decrease of about 62% compared to 2023. In 2025, as mentioned, Daimler Buses registered 665 battery-electric buses, marking a further increase of roughly 75% over 2024 and nearly 188% compared to 2023. MAN rebounded to 386 units in 2025, representing a growth of around 311% year-on-year and approximately 57% above its 2023 level.
