Vy Buss has ordered 73 battery-electric buses from Volvo Buses to support the planned shift to fully electric city operations in the Swedish city of Borås by April 2027. The electric bus procurement covers three vehicle types: 46 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated units for high-capacity urban corridors, 14 Volvo 7900 Electric models, and 13 Volvo 8900 Electric buses intended for regional routes.
Chassis production for the new fleet will take place in Egypt, with bodywork supplied by Volvo’s partner MCV, in the new facility inaugurated in mid September.
Volvo to deliver e-buses in Borås
The vehicles will be used across both city services and interurban connections, including operations to Viared, where Volvo Buses maintains a manufacturing facility. The order also reinforces the company’s long-term industrial presence in Borås, where its production plant became one of the first bus factories globally to operate solely on renewable energy in 2020.
Volvo Buses and local dealer Boråsbil will provide service contracts and depot solutions as part of the delivery framework. According to the manufacturer, confidence in Volvo’s product range and service structure was a central factor in the tender process. Passenger-facing improvements include increased seating capacity, enhanced accessibility and, on selected routes, dual wheelchair areas and flexible interior layouts.
“It is especially rewarding to receive this order for the city of Borås, the place where much of our bus manufacturing has its roots. With this investment, all city bus traffic in Borås will be fully electrified, marking a significant step forward for sustainable public transport in the region,” said Martin Spjern, Country Manager Sweden at Volvo Buses.
“Building on this strong local foundation, we and our dealer Boråsbil have together offered a comprehensive solution that includes service contracts and depot arrangements – ensuring reliability, uptime and long-term performance for the operator,” Spjern added.
“The move toward electrified buses is an important step toward a more sustainable and climate-smart public transit system. At Vy Buss, we are very pleased to have reached an agreement with Volvo Buses for the delivery of their electric buses for our upcoming transit contract in the city of Borås. This marks the beginning of a long-term, forward-looking partnership to develop public transportation in Borås together,” says Robert Nyberg, CEO of Vy Buss AB.
