Daimler Buses has secured a complete contract with Regionalbus Leipzig for the construction of a new electric bus depot at Zwenkau and the delivery of nine battery-electric Mercedes eCitaro solo buses, with operations scheduled to start by early 2027. And “an option has been placed for 17 additional charging points and 18 eCitaro vehicles, potentially entering service by mid-2028, with additional funding applications already underway”, Daimler Truck points out in a press note.

The agreement includes the supply, installation, and commissioning of the depot, its CCS2 charging infrastructure, photovoltaic system, and energy storage, alongside full service and maintenance for both buses and charging points.

Funding for the project, amounting to approximately €3.6 million, has been granted by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Free State of Saxony.

Leipzig turns to Daimler to electrify its bus depot

The Zwenkau e-bus depot will be built adjacent to the existing diesel facility and features a covered carport with eleven bus lanes, 20 parking spaces, and charging bays, shielded by a central fire-protection wall. Daimler Buses, acting as general contractor, will deliver all construction services turnkey—from underground engineering and superstructure work to steel structures, paving, and full electrical installation. The depot includes its own transformer station, battery storage, photovoltaic system, and Sinos load management system.

Initially, ten CCS2 charging points will be operational, distributed over three stationary ABB stations with nine charging sockets and a mobile charger. Each charging point delivers an average of 90 kW, upgradable to 150 kW if required, with the infrastructure designed for future expansion up to 20 charging points, still according to Daimler Truck group.

The nine eCitaro solo buses will be painted in Regionalbus Leipzig’s livery and offer a 12-meter low-floor configuration, with 76 passenger capacity (31 seats, 45 standing) plus the driver. Safety and assistance systems include the active emergency braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist 2, while onboard features include multiple passenger information systems, USB sockets, and a CO₂ air-conditioning system.

Powered by five high-voltage NMC4 battery packs providing a total of 555 kWh, each eCitaro is equipped with dual charging sockets and SmartCharge technology.

Steffen Germ, CEO of Daimler Buses Solutions GmbH, emphasises: “We listen to the customer and implement the individual charging infrastructure solution for them and with them. So, we are proud that we have also convinced Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH to order a complete tailor‑made solution that will prepare it for bus transport that will be CO2 free.”
