Electric buses accounted for nearly one quarter of all new bus and coach registrations in the European Union in 2025, according to data released by ACEA.
New bus registrations in the EU increased by 7.5% year on year in 2025, reaching around 38,000 units, at a time when van and truck markets recorded declines, ACEA figures show. Within this total, electrically chargeable buses – including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models – continued to expand their presence across European markets.
European electric bus market 2025, according to ACEA
ACEA data indicate that electrically chargeable buses represented close to 24% of all new bus registrations in the EU in 2025 (nearly 26% when including EFTA countries and UK). This share increased compared with the previous year (as it was 18.5 in 2024, growing from 16 percent in 2023). Diesel buses remained the largest powertrain category overall, but their share declined as electric models gained ground.
In 2025, 9,089 electrically chargeable buses were registered, an increase of 38.9% compared with 2024, bringing their market share to 23.8%.
According to ACEA, Italy registered 1,371 electrically chargeable buses in 2025, up 16.8% year-on-year, out of a total market of 5,508 units, while diesel registrations in the country stood at 2,684 units, down 10.1% compared with 2024. In the Netherlands, electrically chargeable bus registrations reached 784 units, increasing by 91.7% from the previous year, within a total bus market of 1,091 vehicles, according to ACEA data.
Sweden recorded 898 electrically chargeable buses in 2025, more than tripling volumes compared with 2024, while Belgium registered 737 units, also more than doubling year-on-year.
EU bus market volumes and country performance
Looking at the whole bus and coach market, growth in bus registrations was uneven across member states. Germany remained the largest market by volume, registering 6,890 units in 2025, up 28.0% year-on-year. Poland followed with 2,683 units (+16.6%), while Belgium recorded 1,454 registrations, representing a 72.5% increase. Sweden also posted strong growth, with registrations rising from 783 to 1,950 units (+149.0%).
By contrast, Italy registered 5,508 buses, down 15.9% compared with 2024, while Spain recorded 3,897 units (-4.0%). France remained broadly stable at 6,258 registrations (-0.1%).
