Arriva Italian division announced it raised the share of ‘clean’ vehicles in its bus fleet from 32% at the end of 2024 to 40% at the end of 2025.

The target is outlined in the third edition of the Sustainability Report published by Arriva Italia, the company through which the Arriva Group operates public transport services across several Italian regions. The document confirms a steady acceleration in fleet decarbonisation, supported by continued capital expenditure and a progressively more structured sustainability reporting framework.

Arriva in Italy delivers local public transport services in the Aosta Valley and in the provinces of Turin, Brescia, Bergamo, Lecco and Cremona, and manages dedicated transport services for students with disabilities in the metropolitan area of Rome.

Fleet transition within Arriva’s Italian operations

At the end of 2024, 32% of Arriva Italia’s bus fleet consisted of zero-emission or low-impact vehicles. According to the company, this share increased to 40% by the end of 2025 as new vehicles enter service and older diesel units are phased out.

Fleet renewal remains a core component of Arriva’s industrial plans in Italy. In 2024, investments dedicated to fleet modernisation reached €45.9 million, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen Arriva’s presence in the Italian market while aligning operations with national and European decarbonisation objectives.

Alongside battery-electric buses, Arriva in Italy is assessing alternative technological solutions, including biomethane and other low-carbon fuels, in order to preserve operational flexibility across different service contexts and infrastructure conditions.

Operational scale and performance in 2024

During 2024, Arriva Italia transported 49.7 million passengers across its operating territories. The company employed 1,478 people and operated a fleet of 1,456 vehicles, which collectively covered 51.6 million kilometres over the year.

“The energy transition is redefining the way we operate: we are evaluating new solutions, from biomethane to other alternative fuels, to offer an increasingly sustainable, efficient and reliable public transport service. At the same time, we are investing in our people, promoting diversity, inclusion, training and safety, because they are our most strategic resource for future challenges – says Angelo Costa, CEO of Arriva Italia -. Our daily commitment is to the nearly 50 million passengers who chose our services in 2024, to whom we continue to guarantee quality, innovation and a modern and safe mobility experience.”
