The public transport agency responsible for the metropolitan area of Milan and the provinces of Monza and Brianza, Lodi, and Pavia, in Italy, has chosen Optibus to strengthen its service planning and scenario analysis capabilities. The agreement introduces Optibus’ Strategic Planning platform into the agency’s digital toolkit.

The agency is among the largest public transport authorities in Lombardy and one of the most significant in Italy. Its networks of bus, tram and metro services carried around 500 million passengers in 2023.

Milan’s public transport agency turns to Optibus

The adoption of Optibus comes at a decisive moment, as the agency prepares to launch new concession tenders for the metropolitan area of Milan, Monza and Brianza and Lodi. In this context, the ability to test alternatives, compare network scenarios and quantify the impacts of different service configurations has become essential.

Through Strategic Planning, the agency will work with a more integrated and data-driven approach, Optibus states. The platform enables the validation of GTFS feeds and the comparative assessment of service benchmarks, while also supporting the modelling of scenarios that involve timetable adjustments, route variations and refined transfer coordination. Features such as timetable optimization, corridor planning and transfer optimization provide an analytical framework that is particularly relevant for designing competitive and passenger-oriented tender specifications.

Luca Tosi, Director of Agenzia del Trasporto Pubblico, said: “Optibus is a tool that helps us address the complexity of our network and allows us to analyze complex scenarios in detail. With this software, we are equipping ourselves with increasingly high-performance tools that pinpoint where intervention is needed and apply the most effective solutions to improve the quality of public transport service throughout the region.”

Amos Haggiag, CEO and co-founder, Optibus, said: “We are proud to be part of the mobility system behind one of Europe’s most dynamic metropolitans. Our partnership with Agenzia del Trasporto Pubblico will help the city move intelligently, efficiently, and sustainably for the millions who rely on public transport every day.”
