In November 2025, the Provincial Government of Bolzano in South Tyrol approved a €13.35 million investment programme for SASA SpA, the region’s public transport operator. The 2025 funding is earmarked for energy infrastructure upgrades, acquisition of administrative offices, and construction of staff housing to support the company’s operations and workforce, as reported on Italian trade media and our sister platform Autobusweb.
120 buses to come in Bolzano
This allocation represents the first step in a broader multi-year plan. According to an official provincial release dated 30 September 2025, the Province will provide €33 million in 2026 and €38.5 million in 2027 to support SASA’s zero-emission bus strategy.
The fleet renewal plan envisages the purchase of around 120 buses, including battery-electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel-cell models. The deployment of these vehicles is expected to be completed by 2031. Current data indicate that approximately 10% of SASA’s fleet already consists of zero-emission buses, a share that is gradually increasing.
Infrastructure investments accompanying the fleet expansion include depot upgrades, electric charging stations, and hydrogen refuelling facilities. Funding from Italy’s PNRR programme will partially support these initiatives, enabling SASA to operate a large zero-emission fleet efficiently while maintaining technological neutrality.
The multi-year programme aligns vehicle acquisition with operational requirements and regional sustainability goals, ensuring a structured transition toward a modern, low-emission public transport system in South Tyrol.
