Ballard to supply 500 fuel cell engines for New Flyer buses from 2026

Ballard Power Systems announces it has signed an agreement with New Flyer for 500 fuel cell bus engines totaling 50 MW, with deliveries starting in 2026.

Ballard Power Systems and New Flyer, part of NFI Group, announced a commercial agreement for the supply of 500 FCmove-HD+ fuel cell engines for integration into Xcelsior CHARGE FC hydrogen buses, launched in 2022, in North America. According to a press release by Ballard, this represents the largest single commitment from New Flyer within their long-standing partnership.

Zero-emission buses grew by 16% in the United States in 2025, with hydrogen vehicles seeing strong momentum: +49%, based on the latest CALSTART report.

Ballard unveiled its new-generation transit fuel cell module, the FCmove®-SC, at Busworld in Brussels last year.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026 and will support fuel cell bus deployments across the North American market. The scope includes both fuel cell engines and related fleet services, such as technical support, parts supply and operational monitoring, as stated in the press release by Ballard.

Ballard reports that more than 2,200 fuel cell buses using its technology are currently in operation worldwide, with over 250 million kilometres accumulated and 98% availability.
