Driventic has launched the VEDS 2.2, a new integrated electric drive system designed for heavy-duty buses, e-coaches and medium-duty trucks. It’ll be on show at IAA Transportation in Hannover.

Driventic announced it has expanded its electric drivetrain portfolio with the introduction of the VEDS 2.2, an integrated e-drive system developed for both new vehicle platforms and retrofit applications. The new unit builds on the company’s VEDS architecture and is positioned for heavy commercial vehicle segments, including HD buses, coaches and MD trucks.

The launch follows the introduction of the VEDS 1.5 in 2025, that was made under the brand denomination of Voith. Driventic is the result of the spinoff of Voith’s drivetrain division made in late 2025. That system featured an integrated drive inverter system (DIS) with diagnosis and management unit (DMU), automotive-compliant connector architecture, a compact design and peak power output of up to 390 kW, while complying with ISO 21434 cybersecurity requirements.

Driventic VEDS 2.2 targets heavy-duty vehicle applications

The VEDS 2.2 combines three directly connected components into a single compact unit:

  • an EVO 390 high-speed electric motor
  • a newly developed inverter
  • a single-stage planetary gearbox

An electrically driven oil pump with integrated filter provides lubrication and cooling for both the motor and gearbox.

According to Driventic, the new system weighs 275 kg and has been optimized to improve the torque-to-power ratio required by heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The company states that the reduced number of vehicle interfaces simplifies installation, with only cooling water connections, electrical power and signal connectors, and gearbox sensor interfaces required on the vehicle side.

The drive unit is mounted via dedicated flange interfaces on the motor and gearbox, while torque is transmitted to the axle through a KV180 output flange.

Driventic highlights compatibility with the rear axles of conventional diesel-powered vehicles as one of the system’s key features. This allows existing axle technology to be retained without modification, reducing system costs and making the VEDS 2.2 suitable for vehicle conversion and retrofit programmes.

The company adds that vehicle integration requires only a high-voltage battery, a 24 V electrical system and a low-temperature cooling circuit with an air-to-water heat exchanger. The drivetrain is rated IP6K9K, making it suitable for demanding commercial vehicle operating conditions.
