GreenCell Mobility expands electric bus operations in Puducherry

GreenCell Mobility has introduced 75 electric buses in Puducherry, adding a new batch of zero-emission vehicles to the Union Territory’s public transport network. The rollout was highlighted during an event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was presented by GreenCell Mobility as a further step in the deployment of electric public transport in Indian cities.

The fleet has been deployed from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot and is intended for operation on city and trunk routes in Puducherry. According to GreenCell Mobility, the deployment is designed to strengthen connectivity across the urban network, support last-mile access and improve operational coverage on major corridors.

EKA Mobility supplies the buses for the Puducherry fleet

The buses have been supplied through a partnership between GreenCell Mobility and EKA Mobility. The project brings EKA-built electric buses into Puducherry’s public transport system as part of a fleet addition combining standard and higher-capacity vehicle formats for different route requirements.

The technical and passenger equipment on board includes an Integrated Transport Management System, passenger information systems and real-time vehicle tracking. The buses are also fitted with internal and reverse surveillance cameras. Accessibility features for differently-abled passengers are included in the vehicle configuration presented by the company.

According to GreenCell Mobility, the Puducherry fleet forms part of a wider electric bus platform backed by Eversource Capital. The company states that it operates more than 1,200 electric buses across India and supports these operations with more than 270 charging stations nationwide. GreenCell Mobility also said that several of its projects have been awarded under national electric mobility programmes focused on bus electrification across states and Union Territories.
