Another success for the Lion. In fact, the Munich-based manufacturer has won another award, after taking home “Bus of the Year 2023” with the MAN Lion’s City 12 E. That’s right, because the MAN Lion’s City 10 E was voted “Bus of the Year in Spain” at the National Transport Awards 2023 in Madrid. Introduced last fall, in series production since the beginning of the year (the Polish plant in Starachowice), the midibus is already the winner of its first award.

The 10-meter e-bus convinced the jury of operators and experts with its battery capacity of up to 400 kilowatt hours, a range of up to 300 kilometers, and one of the tightest turning radii on the market, at just 17.2 meters.

Stéphane de Creisquer, Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus Iberia, commented on the win: “We are proud to have received this prestigious award. It spurs us to continue supporting our customers with innovative solutions and vehicles. The award is further proof of the confidence in our products, because the Lion’s City 10 E was only recently launched on the market, but it contains all the experience gained with the Lion’s City E series of electric buses”.

The compact dimensions of the MAN Lion’s City E, a plus

One of the convincing features of the MAN Lion’s City 10 E, are its compact dimensions. Indeed, the midibus version, with a length of 10.5 meters, can exploit its strengths especially in the increasing use of on-demand services, as well as as a maneuverable shuttle to the city center. It has a passenger capacity similar to that of many 12-meter buses, but requires significantly less circulation space in narrow city centers and depots and is also much more maneuverable.

To build the Lion’s City 10 E, designers based themselves on the platform of its big brother, the Lion’s City 12 E. Width, height and overhangs remained unchanged, as did the rear tower concept without an engine, which offers four more seats (maximum 33 seats and 80 passengers in total) than the few competitors in the segment. The “shortening” of the bodywork occurred exclusively between the axles, where a window module was eliminated, resulting in an overall length of 10.5 meters and a weight saving of about 350 kilograms. Despite this significant change, there is still room for a wheelchair or baby carriage in the standing platform. A third door can also be installed, with which 29 seats are still available, and passenger flow is once again greatly improved.

MAN Lion’s City E 10, autonomy stands out

Thanks to these compact measurements, the wheelbase has been significantly reduced from about six meters to 4.40 meters, and the turning radius has dropped to 17.2 meters, a record-breaking value that makes the car extremely maneuverable. Like its larger zero-emission siblings, the Lion’s City 10 E is equipped with PCV adaptive dampers to achieve the best ride characteristics. The midibus thus fits perfectly into the range of electric buses, Although it is the smallest city bus of the new MAN Lion’s City generation, it offers all the advanced technology of its longer counterparts. This also applies to modern safety systems such as ESP, active cornering assistant, LED headlights with daytime running light, or the camera-based MAN OptiView mirror replacement system.

In addition, like all MAN e-buses, the Lion’s City 10 E uses the Group’s proven lithium-ion (NMC) batteries with particularly high energy density and durability. Four or even five packs are installed on the roof. When fully equipped, performance figures are 400 kilowatt-hours and up to 300 km range or 320 kilowatt-hours and 235 km range. The 10-meter e-bus is recharged in the depot via the CCS plug and with a maximum power output of 150 kW. A full charge with four battery packs thus takes less than two and a half hours, while with five packs the bus needs about three hours. It is ideal for quick use as a booster or for short trips around town.
