Cummins to expand Accelera battery manufacturing in Europe with LFP production in Spain

Cummins and its division Accelera by Cummins have announced plans to expand battery manufacturing in Europe, with Advanced LFP battery production planned in Spain for commercial vehicle applications.

The announcement was made at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, where Cummins is presenting battery-electric, hybrid, diesel and natural gas technologies for the commercial vehicle sector. According to Cummins, the European battery manufacturing expansion will be accompanied by its HELM engine platforms and component technologies developed for upcoming emissions requirements.

The announcement follows the presentation of the Accelera LFP tiered battery platform at Busworld Europe 2025. At the event, Cummins described the platform as modular and designed for space-constrained applications including low-floor city buses, with up to five configurations.

Accelera by Cummins to manufacture LFP batteries in Spain

Accelera by Cummins plans to expand its European battery manufacturing activities with production in Spain. According to Cummins, the facility will manufacture its Advanced LFP platform, a modular lithium iron phosphate battery system developed specifically for commercial vehicle applications including buses and trucks.

Cummins states that the batteries have been engineered around the operational requirements of commercial vehicles. The company did not provide details in the announcement concerning the location of the Spanish manufacturing operation, production capacity, investment value or start of production.

In an interview with Sustainable Bus at Busworld Europe 2025, Accelera by Cummins had already confirmed that production of its one-tier battery packs for the transit bus market would be located in Europe, with introduction scheduled for 2028.

Cummins HELM B7.2 and X10 target evolving emissions requirements

Cummins is also displaying its HELM engine platforms at IAA Transportation. The portfolio is designed to cover multiple markets, applications and selected fuel types while allowing OEMs to work with common engine platforms.

Among the products presented in Hannover is the Cummins HELM B7.2. According to Cummins, the engine builds on an existing engine platform and has been developed for evolving emissions requirements while retaining its specified performance, reliability and uptime characteristics.

The X10 is the first Cummins HELM platform engine to launch in Europe. It uses a common engine architecture intended to accommodate advanced diesel and potential future fuel variants.

Cummins states that the X10 has been engineered for global emissions standards including Euro 7. The engine combines high power density with fuel-efficiency developments and is intended to allow operators to downsize from 11-litre and 13-litre engines in applicable installations.
