Daimler Buses states it has been confirmed by Hamburger Hochbahn as the sole supplier of up to 350 fully electric Mercedes eCitaro and eCitaro G city buses. The same OEM has already been awarded up to 250 e-buses by the other city operator VHH.

In March 2024 Hochbahn, headed since December 2023 by Robert Henrich, announced that its electric bus fleet in Hamburg had covered 20 million kilometres. By mid-2024, the number of e-buses was expected to grow to 260 vehicles (199 solo buses and 61 articulated buses), accounting for more than a quarter of the total fleet of almost 1,100 buses.

Mercedes to provide 350 electric buses in Hamburg

Now, following this latest procurement, over the next five years, the new solo and articulated buses are to be delivered to the northern German city of Hamburg, where Hamburger Hochbahn will have a new, first, all electric bus depot operational in 2026 capable of hosting 130 e-buses serving north-east of the city. In 2023 Hamburger Hochbahn raised €300 million in green capital for sustainable projects (with buses expected to receive around 40 percent of the funding).

By the beginning of the 2030s, the entire bus fleet of the operator is to be converted to emission-free drive systems. Hamburger Hochbahn AG relies 100 percent on green electricity to operate its electric buses.

The Mercedes eCitaro offers the proven Citaro platform, modular battery, charging and drive technology and an unrivalled level of safety. It is also embedded in a comprehensive e-mobility system. As part of its sustainability strategy, Daimler Buses offers both electromobility and the appropriate digital services completely ex works from a single source.

The new eCitaro buses of Hamburger Hochbahn AG are equipped with the NMC3 battery generation (it’s worth noticing that Daimler Buses has recently presented details about the upcoming NMC4 generation, that will be provided by Polish BMZ instead of Akasol – BorgWarner).

The buses have a whole host of assistance systems such as Preventive Brake Assist and Sideguard Assist with functions that, in some cases, go far beyond what is required by the General Safety Regulation (GSR) of the European Union. The state-of-the-art CO2 automatic climate control system with sophisticated thermal management ensures a pleasant and comfortable climate.

Depot-first autonomy for European smartbuses

For more than a decade, autonomous buses have been “almost ready.” Demonstrations with safety drivers began around 2015, and ten years later, this is still largely what we see. The reason is not a lack of ambition – it is physics, safety, and economics. Autonomous buses on city streets a...
