Waymo has launched a transit rewards program in the San Francisco Bay Area, offering $2.85 in ride credits to passengers combining its autonomous ride-hailing service with public transportation.
The initiative, announced by Waymo on 22 September 2026, covers 27 transit agencies accepting contactless Visa payments in the Bay Area. The program will initially be available to Waymo employees, before gradually opening to the public over the following weeks. The company has also announced an agreement with Caltrain involving 40 dedicated station parking spaces for its autonomous vehicles.
The program introduces a payment-based reward mechanism connecting autonomous ride-hailing journeys with conventional public transport services, including buses and rail. Waymo states that it plans to extend the initiative to additional cities.
Waymo is the Alphabet-owned company operating fully autonomous ride-hailing services in the United States.
Waymo transit rewards: $2.85 credit for trips connected to transit
Under the new scheme, passengers are required to link a Visa card to their Waymo account through the company’s application. When the same card is used for a Waymo journey and a public transit trip within a two-hour window, the passenger automatically receives $2.85 in Waymo Cash, corresponding to the cost of a bus fare in San Francisco.
The reward is issued as credit for Waymo services rather than as a discount on the public transport fare. Eligibility is based on the use of the linked Visa card for both journeys and compliance with the two-hour interval.
According to Waymo, the initiative applies to all 27 San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies accepting contactless Visa tap-to-pay payments. It operates alongside existing regional transfer discount programs and the contactless payment system introduced across San Francisco’s Muni network in December 2025.
The company reports that more than 50% of its passengers in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, identified as its most mature operating markets, also use public transit. The figure comes from recent rider surveys cited by Waymo in its announcement.
The transit rewards scheme builds on previous initiatives involving public transport credits in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Waymo introduced a public transit credit pilot in San Francisco in October 2024, followed by a similar program in Los Angeles in February 2025.
Waymo and Caltrain partnership
Alongside the rewards program, Waymo has announced a partnership with Caltrain, the regional rail operator serving the San Francisco Peninsula and Silicon Valley.
Under the agreement, Waymo will lease 40 dedicated parking spaces at Caltrain stations, allowing autonomous vehicles to be staged at railway locations and serve passengers connecting with train services.
Caltrain already supports contactless tap-to-pay transactions, making its services eligible for the new Visa-based rewards mechanism.
The agreement covers the allocation of parking capacity for Waymo vehicles. The company has not specified the stations involved, the duration of the lease or the number of autonomous vehicles expected to operate from the designated spaces.
Waymo states that it intends to replicate this arrangement with additional transit agencies.

California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin commented on the initiative: “Governor Newsom has challenged all of us to build a transportation system that meets Californians where they are, and that means making the trip to the station as effortless as the train ride itself. CalSTA welcomes innovations that reward people for choosing transit and make a multimodal trip feel like one seamless journey.”
San José Mayor Matt Mahan stated: “San José has always believed innovation should make everyday life work better. This partnership does exactly that by using new technology to strengthen public transit, not replace it, making regional travel more seamless and giving people more ways to get where they need to go.”
Adam Lenz, Head of Sustainability & Environment at Waymo, added: “Shared mobility is a team effort, and our autonomous ride-hailing service helps expand clean transportation options for everyone. We’re thrilled to partner with local transit agencies to fill multimodal gaps and make daily commutes easier through our new transit rewards program.”
