FPT has obtained certification under the European Union’s new Batteries Regulation for the production of high-voltage batteries. FPT batteries, based on cells by Microvast, are adopted by Iveco Bus e-bus range since end 2024.

FPT Industrial, the Iveco Group brand specializing in low-emission powertrain technologies, has announced that it has obtained certification as a manufacturer of high-voltage batteries in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. According to the company, only three high-voltage battery manufacturers in Europe currently hold this certification.

FPT achieves EU new Batteries Regulation’s certification

The audit was carried out at FPT’s carbon-neutral ePowertrain plant in Turin, inaugurated in 2022, and covered the entire design, development and manufacturing process of the eBS 37 EVO battery pack. The battery is intended for light commercial vehicles, minibuses and marine applications.

The assessment was conducted by TÜV SÜD Denmark ApS, with the participation of representatives from DANAK, Denmark’s national accreditation body, and Accredia, Italy’s accreditation authority. FPT states that the audit evaluated the complete production process, quality systems and assembly operations associated with the battery pack.

The certification anticipates requirements that will become mandatory for European battery manufacturers once Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 fully enters into force. FPT notes that it has already aligned its operations with the regulation since 2024.

eBS 37 EVO battery for minibuses and commercial vehicles

The certified eBS 37 EVO is a modular lithium-ion battery pack with a nominal energy capacity of 37 kWh and a nominal voltage of 355 V. It uses NMC 811 cell technology and is designed for deployment in light commercial vehicles, minibuses and recreational boating applications.

According to FPT, the battery achieves an energy density above 140 Wh/kg and allows a depth of discharge of up to 95 per cent. The pack weighs 260 kg and can be configured with up to four batteries in parallel and two in series.

The battery is managed through the FPT-developed eBM 5 Battery Management System, while regulatory compliance includes ECE R100.4 and ECE R10.6 requirements. FPT adds that the battery is “battery passport-ready”, in line with future European traceability requirements.

In brief

  • What certification has FPT obtained? Certification as a high-voltage battery manufacturer under EU Regulation 2023/1542.
  • Where was the audit conducted? At FPT’s ePowertrain plant in Turin, Italy.
  • Which battery was assessed? The eBS 37 EVO, a 37 kWh battery pack for light commercial vehicles, minibuses and marine applications.
  • When will the regulation become mandatory? The audit process will become mandatory when the EU Batteries Regulation enters fully into force.

Certification supports FPT electrification strategy

The company states that the certification provides independent validation of the manufacturing process and product quality for its high-voltage battery portfolio. The eBS 37 EVO is part of FPT’s broader electrification offering, which includes battery packs, battery management systems and electric propulsion solutions for commercial vehicle applications.

“FPT demonstrated strong readiness ahead of schedule by passing the audit,” says Simone Gianoglio, Technology & Digital Validation & Homologation Vehicle & Battery Homologation for Iveco Group. “This is all the more gratifying for us since we were specifically chosen by TÜV SÜD as a pilot audit. This prestigious certification testifies our commitment to reliable, high-performance electrification solutions, with our range of advanced battery management systems and innovative energy storage systems, designed to maximize battery life and efficiency across a wide range of mission requirements.”

“At FPT, we have seen a highly motivated and very professional team that has fully committed to embedding quality in the manufacturing process,” says Yalcin Ölmez, Lead Auditor for the EU Batteries Regulation at TÜV SÜD Denmark. “What we have seen is battery production that meets the highest standards.”
