Croatian government has finalized a EUR 163 million national program supporting the procurement of 206 electric buses for public urban and suburban transport across 17 cities and municipalities.
The Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure confirmed (as reported on Balkan Green Energy News) that seventeen local authorities have been awarded EUR 143 million in subsidies for electric bus procurement, with the total investment value reaching EUR 163 million.
Zagreb’s public transport company ZET launched a preliminary consultation for the purchase of 70 electric buses in spring 2025, following the introduction of the first electric bus (a Iveco Bus Crossway Le City Elec) into Zagreb’s public transport fleet a few weeks earlier.
Croatia invests in electric buses
Seven contracts were signed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan with the cities of Jastrebarsko, Zaprešić, Sisak, Osijek, Pula and Zadar, and the Municipality of Pisarovina. These projects cover the procurement of 68 electric buses, with a total value of EUR 53.3 million, including EUR 41.9 million in subsidies. The agreements were signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković and the Director of the Central Finance and Contracting Agency for EU programmes and projects, Dragan Jelić, together with representatives of public transport operators.
According to the ministry, the completion of these contracts marks the conclusion of the national program for the modernization of public urban and suburban transport. Earlier contracts were signed last year with Križevci, Krapina, Ludbreg, Varaždin, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Rijeka and Split. All participating local authorities also received funding for charging infrastructure.
The program enables the purchase of 206 electric buses, with vehicles featuring a minimum range of 300 kilometres. Initial arrivals are expected in Osijek, Jastrebarsko, Zadar, Pula, Zaprešić, Sisak and Pisarovina, the ministry stated.
