The arrival of 47 new Iveco Bus E-Way buses brings Cagliari’s public transport operator CTM closer to operating a fleet that is 70% battery-electric.

CTM has placed into service 47 new Iveco Bus E-Way battery-electric buses in Quartu Sant’Elena, in the metropolitan area of Cagliari, Italy. The 10.7-metre vehicles have been assigned to routes 8 and 20, among the busiest in the urban network, as well as routes 30R and 1Q. The news was reported on Italian trade media and our sister platform Autobusweb.

The delivery completes what CTM describes as the largest fleet renewal programme in its history. According to the operator, the introduction of the new vehicles will allow 70% of its fleet to be battery-electric by the first half of 2026. Earlier this year the carrier has presented a batch of three hydrogen buses sourced from Solaris, which is another major supplier for CTM’s zero emission bus fleet (also hybrid buses have been deployed).

PNRR funding supports CTM fleet renewal

The overall investment programme amounts to approximately €92 million for the procurement of new buses. The programme has been financed through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with the Municipality of Cagliari acting as the primary beneficiary and allocating the funds to CTM for the implementation of its fleet electrification strategy.

According to CTM, once the PNRR-funded programme and other national funding schemes are completed, the operator will have 236 fully electric buses in service by 2030, including 152 vehicles purchased through PNRR resources.

CTM targets fully electric fleet by 2030

The operator states that the completion of the investment programme will result in one of Italy’s lowest-emission urban bus fleets. Alongside the deployment of new vehicles, CTM and the Municipality of Cagliari are strengthening charging infrastructure through two charging facilities, located in Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena, while also working on network expansion and service improvements.
