Nuremberg carrier VAG is expanding its electric bus fleet taking delivery of 31 new Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G articulated buses, supplied by Daimler Buses. The first of this batch, delivered in May 2025, is also the 100th electric bus in VAG’s fleet.

With these additions, the number of eCitaro and eCitaro G buses in service rises to 77, accounting for nearly 70% of VAG’s electric fleet, as Daimler Truck states in a press note. A 46-units order was executed in 2023. Also MAN vehicles are running with VAG’s livery (and in the same city it’s launching battery production at its premises). The company aims to convert its entire bus fleet to battery-electric drive by the early 2030s.

The new articulated buses are equipped with four doors, accommodate up to 124 passengers, and feature seven battery packs with a total capacity of 686 kWh. This allows for a daily range of up to 300 km under typical operating conditions, the manufacturer states. Charging is carried out at VAG’s eBus port in Schweinau, which includes photovoltaic support and capacity for simultaneous charging of 39 buses.

The vehicles are equipped with standard safety systems such as Preventive Brake Assist 2, Sideguard Assist 2, Frontguard Assist, and AVAS. Passenger comfort features include LED lighting, CO₂ heat pump air conditioning, antiviral air filters, USB charging ports, and infotainment monitors. Connectivity is supported via Daimler’s Omniplus digital services.

VAG currently operates around 200 buses on over 50 routes and transports up to 640,000 passengers per day. The electric fleet is powered by 100% locally sourced green electricity.
