Luminator has outlined a transformation strategy focused on integrating its established onboard hardware portfolio with software, data and AI-based technologies for public transport operators.

The US-headquartered transportation technology company announced the strategy on September 28, ahead of APTA EXPO 2026, which will take place in Chicago from October 4 to 7.

Luminator describes the process as a transition from its historical role as an onboard hardware supplier for bus and rail vehicles toward an integrated technology provider. The company said its current approach brings together passenger information, safety and security systems and fleet-wide visibility within a connected digital architecture.

According to Luminator, the transformation includes investments in technology architecture, software platforms, hardware, data and analytics, alongside changes to internal processes and staff development.

The strategy follows the direction outlined by CEO Magnus Friberg in a July 2026 interview with Sustainable Bus, when he described Luminator’s activities across passenger information, video surveillance, data and AI-enabled applications and discussed the integration of these technologies within transit operations.

Luminator develops open architecture for transit

Luminator said its technology architecture is being developed around open standards to support interoperability between systems.

The architecture combines onboard hardware with scalable software platforms and data and analytics capabilities. The company said its development work is focused on connecting individual systems rather than treating hardware and software products as separate technology deployments.

The portfolio covers passenger information systems, destination and infotainment solutions, mobile video surveillance, video mirror systems and software for managing these technologies.

Luminator also said it has been investing in employee training, process improvement and continuous learning as part of the transformation programme.

The company was founded in 1928 and currently has more than 850 employees. According to figures provided by Luminator, it supports more than 3,000 customers across 85 countries.

Luminator to present digital transit platforms at APTA EXPO 2026

Luminator will present the technology portfolio at APTA EXPO in Chicago from October 4 to 7, 2026, at booth 659.

The company said its exhibition will cover its passenger experience and safety and security portfolios, including the Luminator Software Suite, Passenger Information System, destination and infotainment products, mobile video surveillance and Video Mirror Safety technology.

According to Luminator, its current development programme is based on combining these systems through a common architecture incorporating hardware, software and data.

The company said the architecture is intended to accommodate software development and additional data and analytics functions over time. No specific new product launches, investment figures or implementation timetable for the wider transformation programme were disclosed in the announcement.

The new chapter of Luminator is customer-centric, forward-looking, and focused on consistency, reliability, and partnership.
