Syracuse University has selected ETA Transit Systems to modernise the technology platform supporting its campus transit fleet.

Syracuse University is a private research university in Syracuse, New York. The ITS project covers a 23-vehicle fixed-route fleet and includes the installation of onboard fleet management equipment, passenger information systems, automatic passenger counting technology and digital signage. According to ETA Transit Systems, the deployment is scheduled for completion before the start of the university’s autumn semester.

Fleet technology upgrade for Syracuse University’s campus buses

ETA Transit Systems is a North American provider of Intelligent Transportation Systems for public transport operators. Its cloud-based SPOT platform integrates real-time vehicle tracking, CAD/AVL, passenger information, automatic passenger counting, ridership analytics and rider communication functions for fleet management.

The project will equip Syracuse University’s fixed-route buses with ETA’s Intelligent Transportation System platform, including Vehicle Logic Units, rugged mobile data terminals and automatic passenger counters (APCs).

In brief

  • Who was selected for the project? ETA Transit Systems will supply and install the new fleet technology.
  • How many vehicles are included? The deployment covers a 23-vehicle fixed-route campus bus fleet.
  • What technologies will be installed? The project includes fleet management equipment, automatic passenger counters, onboard passenger information systems and digital signage.
  • When is the system expected to enter service? ETA Transit Systems expects the installation to be completed before the start of Syracuse University’s autumn semester.

The contract also includes onboard audio and visual next-stop announcement systems, new interior digital displays and an outdoor weather-resistant LCD display designed to provide real-time passenger information and other content at a key campus location.

Passenger information and fleet management systems

The technology package combines fleet management and passenger information functions with ridership monitoring. Automatic passenger counters will provide boarding and alighting data, while the onboard equipment will support vehicle tracking and operational management across the university’s transit network.

The outdoor digital display will deliver real-time service information for passengers at a campus stop, complementing the onboard passenger information systems installed on the vehicles.

“We’re proud that Syracuse University chose ETA to power the next generation of its transit system,” said John Maglio, CEO of ETA Transit Systems. “For students, this means a transit experience they can count on — accurate, real-time arrival information right at their fingertips, so they always know exactly when their ride is coming. Syracuse needs this installed within 9 weeks, so we adjusted our schedule to make it happen — that’s what ETA does.”
