Vancouver, a Canadian city of 631,000 inhabitants, is relying heavily on trolleybuses and has announced the renewal of its trolleybus fleet, which is being considerably expanded for the occasion.

The new fleet, which will be made available to Translink, the public transport operator of Greater Vancouver, will consist of as many as 512 trolleybuses (including options) to replace the 262 vehicles, 74 of which are articulated, currently in operation, and delivered between 2006 and 2009. 

The tender was published on 16 May 2024 for a supply of up to 107 trolleybuses and options for a further 405 vehicles and the winner is Solaris, while the electrical equipment will be supplied by Medcom.

Several orders are envisaged, depending on the availability of financing: the first phase the delivery in 2026 of 107 12-metre vehicles, with a contract value of C$181 million. The second phase, subject to the availability of financing, will involve an order for 155 trolleybuses, 74 of which will be articulated, completing the renewal of the current fleet.

We are now waiting for the first prototype from Solaris.
