First of 112 Solaris Trollino IMC trolleybuses enters service with AMT Genoa

Municipal carrier AMT has introduced the first Solaris Trollino trolleybuses into passenger service in Genoa, marking the start of deployment of a 112-vehicle fleet.

The first Solaris Trollino trolleybuses entered service in Genoa on 20 July, operating on AMT’s route 20 between Via Rimassa and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The vehicles are the first units from a fleet of 112 articulated trolleybuses that will progressively join the operator’s network, according to Italian trade media and our sister media Autobusweb.

The procurement process dates back to 2024, when AMT Genoa selected Solaris and Hess in the tender for the supply of a massive fleet of trolleybuses and flash-charged e-buses, with the contract initially covering 112 articulated trolleys. Solaris announced that Škoda Electric would supply the traction equipment for the fleet, while vehicle assembly would be carried out by Solaris. In April 2025, the first Trollino 18 was unveiled in Genoa, ahead of the start of deliveries.

The introduction of the new trolleybuses comes while AMT is undergoing a financial stabilisation process. According to the company’s approved 2024 financial statements, AMT reported a net loss of €55.9 million and total debt of approximately €280 million at the end of 2024, including more than €73 million owed to banks and over €85 million to suppliers. In July 2026, the Liguria Region approved a €40 million support package for the operator, while the Municipality of Genoa and the regional authority also confirmed measures aimed at strengthening the company’s financial position and ensuring business continuity.

Solaris Trollino 18 trolleybuses enter service in Genoa

The new vehicles are 18-metre Solaris Trollino 18 articulated trolleybuses with a capacity of 133 passengers. They are equipped with In Motion Charging (IMC) technology, allowing operation both under the overhead catenary and in battery-electric mode.

The IMC system is supported by four battery packs installed on the roof and in the rear compartment of the vehicle, enabling operation on sections of the route without overhead wires.

The passenger area includes 36 seats, two wheelchair spaces with an access ramp and 40 USB charging ports. The trolleybuses are also equipped with LED interior lighting and air conditioning.

The driver’s cab is fully enclosed and complemented by a video surveillance system featuring six security cameras. An additional four cameras are dedicated to the automatic passenger counting system, while seven service cameras monitor the trolley poles and doors.
