Tata Motors has secured more than 3,400 electric commercial vehicle orders across India’s freight and passenger transport sectors.

Tata Motors announced that it has received over 3,400 orders for electric commercial vehicles (eCVs), covering small commercial vehicles, pick-ups, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and buses. The orders span a broad range of operational applications and represent one of the largest recent order announcements in India’s electric commercial vehicle market.

According to the company, the order intake includes approximately 2,000 small commercial vehicles and pick-ups, around 900 trucks and about 500 buses. The vehicles are expected to be deployed across sectors including e-commerce, logistics, FMCG and FMCD distribution, intra-city transportation, cement, steel, mining and airport tarmac operations, as well as intercity and urban passenger mobility.

The announcement was released by Tata on June 22nd 2026. The Indian group is in the process of taking over Iveco Group following deal announced in September 2025.

Existing electric fleet exceeds 3,800 buses

Looking at data of the India bus market 2025, 4,441 electric buses were registered, up from 3,730 units in 2024, according to Vahan Dashboard data (+19%). PMI Electro Mobility, Olectra Greentech and Switch Mobility led the market, while Tata registered a dramatic decrease: -84%.

Now, in a statement, Tata Motors announces that it currently has more than 3,800 electric buses in operation across several Indian cities. According to the company, these buses have accumulated more than 550 million kilometres of operation.

The manufacturer also reported that over 17,000 Tata electric small commercial vehicles are currently operating on Indian roads.

Over the past twelve months, Tata Motors has broadened its electric commercial vehicle range with products targeting different payload requirements and duty cycles.

In the small commercial vehicle segment, the company offers the Ace Pro EV, Ace EV and Intra EV platforms for last-mile and urban distribution operations. The portfolio has also expanded into heavier vehicle categories with the Ultra EV range covering gross vehicle weights from 7 to 12 tonnes.

For heavy-duty freight operations, Tata Motors has introduced the Prima EV 55T tractor and the Prima EV 28T tipper. In the passenger transport segment, the company’s electric bus portfolio includes the Starbus EV and Ultra EV buses for city and intercity services.
