Indian city of Indore will receive 150 air-conditioned electric buses as part of the PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme, the highest allocation among participating cities, is reported on The Times of India.

Local manufacturer JBM announced in mid-February it has secured an order for 1,021 electric buses under the Government of India’s PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme-2 initiative.

Indore to get 150 e-buses

Indore is the largest city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, with a population of approximately 3.2 million.

The PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme, operating under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is designed to integrate electric buses into urban transport networks. The addition of these buses is expected to improve transit services and support environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. The city administration anticipates the generation of carbon credits as a result of this transition.

According to municipal authorities, Indore currently operates 179 CNG buses and over 70 electric buses. Plans are in place to phase out diesel-powered buses on the city’s Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and replace them with electric alternatives upon delivery.

Infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging is being expanded to accommodate this shift. Indore currently has 27 public charging stations with 211 charging points, including 18 solar-powered stations. These facilities are also used by e-rickshaw operators. The municipal corporation has outlined further expansion plans to support the growing demand for EV charging solutions, still according to the local outlet.
