Italy registered 1,044 battery-electric buses in the first eleven months of 2025, reports our sister media Autobusweb based on data by ANFIA. They represent a 63.4% increase over 2024 and account for nearly 29% of all bus and coach registrations over 8 ton.

From January to November, 3,629 buses above 8 tonnes were registered, down 11.8% year-on-year, yet the performance of the electric segment more than offsets the decline in other propulsion categories, reshaping procurement dynamics, especially in Class I fleets.

Within the urban Class I category—long the primary arena for technological innovation—electrification has now become the dominant choice: 1,017 of the 1,590 new Class I buses are electric. This 64% penetration rate marks a structural shift in procurement criteria.

Iveco Bus leads Italian electric bus market

Iveco Bus remains the clear national leader, with 343 electric registrations equal to 32.9% of the BEV market. King Long emerges as the second strongest BEV player with 152 units (14.6%), followed closely by Karsan at 140 units (13.4%).

Below the top three, Solaris records 97 units (9.3%), maintaining a stable presence in public tenders, while Yutong secures 69 units (6.6%).

Daimler Buses (49 units, 4.7%) and Menarini (45 units, 4.3%) demonstrate more moderate penetration, then MAN follows at 36 units (3.4%).

The remaining tail—Rampini (29), Bluebus (25), Otokar (18), Higer (15), BYD (14), BMC and Caetano (5 each), Alfabus (2)—illustrates how wide the competitive base has become.

Italian bus market 2025, segment by segment

The 3,629 registrations recorded as of 30 November 2025 outline a market still led by diesel, which totals 1,446 units and declines 7.5% from last year’s 1,585, accounting for 39.9% of the fleet. Battery-electric traction continues to expand, reaching 1,044 e-buses—up 63.4%—for a 28.8% share. Gas-powered vehicles amount to 829 registrations (800 CNG and 29 LNG), a 27% decrease from 2024’s 1,134 units, representing 22.8% of all new plates.
