BYD is working on the introduction of a battery-electric coach for the UK market in 2026, with further plans reportedly involving a 12-metre model targeting at least 600 kilometres of range for continental Europe from 2027.
The manufacturer’s plans for the British market were first disclosed in April 2026 by Frank Thorpe, Managing Director of BYD Commercial Vehicle UK, in an interview with British trade publication route-one. Thorpe announced that the first model would be specifically developed for the UK, rather than adapted from an existing electric coach already offered in other markets. Technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.
Additional details have lately emerged from German trade publication omnibus.news, which reports, citing Horst Woitschig, responsible for BYD Europe’s sales activities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, that the manufacturer is targeting the German market from 2027. According to the publication, a 12-metre electric coach with a target range of at least 600 kilometres could be followed by a 15-metre three-axle version, with European production reportedly planned at BYD’s Komárom facility in Hungary. These technical and industrial plans have not yet been detailed in an official BYD product announcement.
The European zero emission coach market is taking off…
The European electric coach segment is also seeing new vehicle introductions and operational deployments from several manufacturers, although Yutong remains to date the only manufacturer with battery-electric coaches already in commercial service on European long-distance routes. MAN presented its Lion’s Coach E at Busworld Europe 2025, with first deliveries scheduled for 2026. Scania has introduced a high-floor battery-electric platform for coach applications, while Volvo Buses has expanded its electric coach offering with the BZR Electric CD for the European market (that will be delivered in Norway). Daimler Buses is meanwhile working with FlixBus on battery-electric coach development under the ELCH project.
On the operational side, FlixBus has introduced electric coach services between Lisbon and Porto, while Austrian operator Blaguss has deployed Yutong electric coaches for FlixBus services. Charging infrastructure projects are also emerging, including facilities for electric trucks and coaches at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
BYD electric coach: European rollout and charging infrastructure
BYD has already tested battery-electric coaches in Germany. In 2018, FlixBus introduced a BYD C9 on the Mannheim–Frankfurt route (see picture), but the operation ended prematurely in December 2019 after approximately 13 months. The operator cited recurring technical problems, particularly with charging infrastructure.

BYD electric coaches coming to Europe in 2027
Back to the new German plans, “Woitschig confirmed to omnibus.news the plans for a locally emission-free coach for the German market. BYD named 2027 as the year for the European launch“, writes the German outlet.
Now BYD is also reportedly preparing a dedicated European sales structure for electric coaches. Woitschig told omnibus.news that the vehicles would be distributed through a new dealer network and sales team, supported by existing aftersales operations.
According to Woitschig, BYD currently has 16 partner workshops in Germany and an approximately 18,000-square-metre spare parts warehouse in the Netherlands, offering overnight and 24-hour delivery services.
In the UK, BYD has opened an 80,000-square-foot pre-delivery inspection and technical centre in Reading, as reported by routeone in April. The facility handles new-vehicle preparation and technical work.
The forthcoming UK electric coach could potentially be unveiled at Euro Bus Expo 2026, taking place in Birmingham from 3 to 5 November 2026. However, although BYD is confirmed as an exhibitor, the official vehicle preview mentions only three electric city buses. There is currently no confirmation that the electric coach will be presented at the event.
